The Rochester Jr. Americans, a Tier 1 (AAA) hockey organization and the largest youth hockey program in New York State, is seeking dedicated non-parent hockey coaches to join our team as AAA Head Coaches or Assistant Coaches. Our teams routinely compete at the highest levels, with frequent appearances in state and national championship tournaments. This part-time position offers a unique opportunity for former players to stay connected to the game while giving back to the next generation of hockey talent.
Position Overview:
- Season Commitment: August through March/April.
- Schedule: August training camp; 2-3 practices per week (evenings) plus games on weekends; Tournaments throughout the season.
- Travel: Local games and travel throughout the Northeast, including destinations such as Toronto, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Boston.
- Rinks: Practices and games primarily at Rochester Ice Center, with additional ice time at rinks across Monroe County.
Qualifications:
- Experience playing hockey at a high level (Prep, Juniors, College, or Professional)
- Experience working with kids ages 8-19 (coaching experience preferred for Head Coach roles)
- USA Hockey certification required, including an approved background check and SafeSport certification
- Strong communication skills and a passion for teaching and mentoring young athletes
Responsibilities:
- Plan and lead practices using tools provided (i.e., icehockeysystems.com) to focus on skill development, teamwork, and hockey IQ
- Coordinate with our training partners at Next Level Strength and Conditioning for off-ice training program; and our goaltending training through New Edge School of Goaltending.
- Conduct classroom and video review sessions throughout the season with players and staff
- Lead the coaching staff (head coaches)
- Motivate and guide players during games and tournaments
- Collaborate with the team manager and Jr. Amerks Board members to plan the season, including scheduling games and tournaments
- Communicate effectively with parents regarding schedules, expectations, and team progress
- Obtain and maintain USA Hockey Coaching Certification
- Foster a positive and competitive team environment
- Utilize provided training aids, equipment, and coaching resources to enhance team performance
- Participate in Jr. Amerks mentoring opportunities such as NAHL Shadow Days

Stipend
Non-parent coaches are provided with a seasonal stipend commensurate with experience. This stipend is designed to support their efforts and ensure they have the resources needed to contribute effectively throughout the season.
Education and Mentoring
Our head coaches receive comprehensive support from our Hockey Operations Committee throughout the season, ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed to succeed. They maintain regular communication with their respective Hockey Director and have access to unique opportunities like 'NAHL Shadow Days,' where they can spend time with NAHL coaching staff both on and off the ice. Additionally, our coaches benefit from ongoing education through USA Hockey and NYSAHA programs, helping them continuously grow and refine their coaching skills.
Expense Reimbursement
Coaches are reimbursed for travel expenses and costs related to USA Hockey registration, background checks, and other required certifications, with assistance from the team manager to streamline the process.
Jr. Amerks Coaching Apparel
Coaches are outfitted with high-quality apparel to represent the Jr. Amerks both on and off the ice. This includes a professional-grade warm-up tracksuit for practices, a durable and stylish CCM winter jacket for games, and an assortment of additional team-branded gear and swag. These items ensure our coaches are comfortable, prepared, and proudly display their affiliation with the premier hockey organization in New York State
TRAINING AIDS
Coaches have access to a wide range of training tools to elevate their practices. This includes essentials like pucks, puck bags, cones, whistles, and whiteboards, along with advanced training aids such as shooter tutors, passing rebounders, and EdgeBoss systems at the Rochester Ice Center, available for use at any time. Each rink is also stocked with additional equipment like tires and cones to further support skill development and effective practice sessions. Additionally, each coach receives a subscription to IceHockeySystems.com, granting access to an extensive library of drills, practice plans, and coaching resources to enhance their effectiveness and creativity on the ice.
